Each year Blackpool becomes the host for the World Fireworks Championships in which leading companies from different parts of the world compete to demonstrate their pyrotechnic skills. Participation is by invitation ensuring that the best experts are involved. Entrants combine advanced techniques with music which shows characteristics and traditions of their countries. This enables spectators to see types of fireworks used in various lands around the globe, creating a fascinating blend of sound, light and colour. The contest is held during the first weeks of Blackpool Illuminations, with the initial display usually being presented during switch on weekend, or the weekend after. The 2008 Schedule is Sunday 31st August – Germany. Then on 5th, 12th, 19th September, Ireland Canada and China respectively. On Friday 26th September the winners of the Championship will be announced together with a celebration performance.

The 2008 Fireworks are launched from North Pier and each heat is free to enter. The build up starts approximately 7.30pm, including an evening of entertainment presented by 97.4 Rock FM, with fireworks commencing at about 8.30. The spectacles are extremely popular with both residents and visitors to Blackpool, and they attract thousands of spectators to the promenade. In 2008 there will also be end of season displays at the Pleasure Beach on November 1st and 2nd. They will be accompanied by Rock FM and a live band – the stage is in the middle of the amusement park across from the Gold Mine ride.
