Blackpool illuminations switch on is the biggest night of the year in the resort, and one of the most important events in the UK tourist diary. It takes place on the first Friday after the August Bank Holiday and is always performed by a famous celebrity, such as a sports or show business star. In 2007 it was Dr Who actor David Tennant, and in 2008 the BBC Television Top Gear presenters – Jeremy Clarkson, David Hammond and James May. The Blackpool lights turn on concert has become an essential part of the ceremony, with invited artistes performing. These have included, the Bee Gees, Status Quo, Erasure, Rachel Stevens, Geri Halliwell and Ronan Keating.
The live show is broadcast nationally on BBC Radio 2 and is held in an arena which is purpose built for the occasion. The arena opens in mid afternoon and the build up commences at about 6 pm, again involving performing artistes, with the lights being turned on at approximately 9.25 in the evening. The switch on show has been presented by celebrities such as Dale Winton and Chris Evans, and in 2008 Janice Long will be the presenter. The event represents the start of the sixty six lights spectacular and initiates a weekend of activities including the opening display of the World Fireworks Championships, assuming acceptable weather conditions.
