Blackpool illuminations 2011 will start on Friday September 2nd and will continue until 6th November. The illuminations switch on ceremony will take place on central car park behind Blackpool Sea life Centre and the lights will be turned on by Keith Lemon an alter ego of the comedian Leigh Francis. The celebrity line up will also include, Beverley Knight, James Morrison Scouting For Girls Darren Hayes, The Reason 4, Wynne Evans, Pixie Lott, The Kixx Joe McElderry, Olly Murs Paul Carrack, Wonderland, and The Overtones. Tickets for the concert are free and they will be allocated randomly. Each household will be limited to a maximum of six tickets and half of the tickets will be allocated to people living in the area of the borough of Blackpool. The closing date for registration is 12 noon on Tuesday August 16th 2011 and people that are successful in applying for tickets will be sent emails notifying them of this on Friday August 19th 2011. Applications for tickets can be made by going to the website visitblackpool.com. Tickets will be for the main Blackpool illuminations 2011 switch on arena. For people without tickets the concert will also be shown live on a big screen on Blackpool promenade near central pier. In addition, the switch on show will be broadcast live on smooth radio and real radio on the national networks of the stations. The concert can also be heard on the websites of these radio stations. The Blackpool illuminations 2011 switch on is the start of the lights season which will continue for nine weeks and are an important aspect of tourism in the resort, attracting millions of visitors annually. It is estimated that the illuminations contribute over 270 million pounds to the economy of the town. The 2011 lights will extend for a rather shorter distance than usual; instead of beginning at Starr Gate they will start at the Solaris Centre on South Promenade. The Welcome Arch will also be repositioned to an area near the Solaris Centre. 0n week nights the 2011 illuminations will be switched off at 10.30 pm instead of the usual time of 11.00 pm From 24th to 27th October however they will remain on until 11.00 pm on week nights. Throughout the sixty six night Blackpool illuminations season the lights will stay on until 12.00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 11.00 pm on Sundays. On Friday 2nd September, the 2011 switch-on night, they will remain on until 2.00 pm. On the day before the lights start another significant event will take place – the reopening of Blackpool Tower after renovation work costing an estimated twenty million pounds. This year will be the last of the switch-on concerts to take place in the area of central car park. Next year Blackpool tower headland will be the location of the event. The 2011 illuminations will present a number of new displays. The stretch of road under Blackpool tower will have a set of diamond themed white illuminations called Bling comprising twenty thousand lamps and over a million LEDs, creating the effect of glittering jewellery. The present Blackpool tower lights will be replaced by a programmable system based on LEDs. The Local Heads section of the illuminations will become Famous Heads and will include additional designs featuring previous Blackpool lights switch on celebrities and also comedians from the Comedy Carpet. There will also be a new tableau from the designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen: Theatre D’Amour. The Illuminations Map returns providing a detailed guide to the lights. For 2011 coach parties will have an opportunity to have their own tour guide through the six mile length of the lights. The guides will provide passengers with details and facts about the illuminations including historical information. The extremely popular World Firework Championships will again be held in the resort and will take place on the following Fridays - September 9th (GFA Pyro, Canada), September 16th (Rohr, Germany), September 23rd (Foti International, Australia). On Friday September 30th Kimbolton Fireworks will provide an exhibition fireworks display closing the ceremony. The build up to each display will start at approximately seven thirty pm. and entertainment will be provided by Rock FM. The fireworks will start at about 8.30 pm. All displays are subject to appropriate weather conditions.
